"인생들아 어느때까지 나의 영광을 변하여 욕되게 하며 허사를 좋아하고 궤휼을 구하겠는고(셀라)" (시편 4:2)

 

어떤 저자는 자신의 책 속에서 눈먼 이스라엘 백성들이 그토록 학수 고대하던 자기네 왕에게 어떤 영예를 안겨 주었는지 그 목록을 애통하는 심정으로 적어 놓았습니다. 그 내용이 아주 유익하므로 여기 한번 옮겨 보도록 하겠습니다. (1) 그들은 주님께 영광의 행렬을 제공해 드렸습니다. 그 행렬 속에는 로마 병정, 유대인 제사장, 일반인들이 끼어 있었는데 왕되신 주님 자신은 십자가를 지고 가셨습니다. 이것이 바로 인간의 가장 무서운 적들을 전복시키러 오신 주님께 이 세상이 제공해 드린 축하 행사입니다. 그때 주님을 환영한 유일한 소리는 야유와 조롱의 함성이요 주님께 드려진 유일한 찬가는 잔인하고 무자비하게 퍼붓는 악담이었습니다. (2) 그들은 왕되신 주님께 영광의 포도주를 드렸습니다. 그들은 금잔에 담긴 진한 포도주 대신 범법자의 감각을 마비시켜 사망의 아픔을 느끼지 못하게 하는 쓸개 탄 포도주를 주님께 드렸습니다. 그러나 주님은 그로 인해 사망의 맛에 조금이라도 손상이 가지 않게 하시려고, 즉 사망을 있는 그대로 체험하시기 위해 그 잔을 거부하셨습니다. 그 후에 주님이 다시 “내가 목마르다”고 부르짖자 그들은 해면에 신 포도주를 적셔 주님 입에 갖다 댔습니다. 오! 왕의 아들을 이렇게 고약하게 냉대하다니! (3) 그들은 주님께 영광의 경호원을 제공해 드렸습니다. 그 보초들은 주님 옷을 가지고 내기를 걸 만큼 주님을 업신여겼습니다. 네 명의 잔인한 도박꾼, 이들이 바로 천국에서 찬미와 경외를 받으실 분을 경호한 보초들이었습니다. (4) 피묻은 나무 위에는 주님을 위해 영광의 가시관이 마련되어 있었습니다. 실은 하나님을 배신한 인간들이 그들의 왕인 주님께 이보다 더 편한 안식처를 제공해 줄 리 만무합니다. 사실 십자가는 이 세상이 주님을 향해 갖고 있는 감정의 완전한 표현이라 할 수 있습니다. 그들은 마치 “하나님의 아들인 너, 이것이 바로 우리가 하나님께 닿을 수만 있다면 하나님 자신을 대접하고 싶은 방식이다”라고 말하는 것 같았습니다. (5) 주님께 주어진 영광의 칭호는 명목상으로나마 “유대인의 왕”이었습니다. 그러나 눈먼 이스라엘 백성들은 그 칭호를 거부하고 실제로는 주님을 “도적들의 왕”이라 부른 셈이 되었습니다. 왜냐하면 그들은 바라바를 택하고 예수님을 십자가에 못박되, 가장 수치스러운 곳인 두 도적 사이에 못박았기 때문입니다. 이렇게 해서 주님의 영광은 모든 점에서 인생들에 의해 수치와 욕으로 변했지만 성도들과 천사들 눈에는 영원토록 즐거운 것이 될 것입니다.

 

 

"O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame?" --Psalm 4:2

 

An instructive writer has made a mournful list of the honours which the blinded people of Israel awarded to their long-expected King. (1.) They gave Him a procession of honour, in which Roman legionaries, Jewish priests, men and women, took a part, He Himself bearing His cross. This is the triumph which the world awards to Him who comes to overthrow man's direst foes. Derisive shouts are His only acclamations, and cruel taunts His only paeans of praise. (2.) They presented Him with the wine of honour. Instead of a golden cup of generous wine they offered Him the criminal's stupefying death-draught, which He refused because He would preserve an uninjured taste wherewith to taste of death; and afterwards when He cried, "I thirst," they gave Him vinegar mixed with gall, thrust to His mouth upon a sponge. Oh! wretched, detestable inhospitality to the King's Son. (3.) He was provided with a guard of honour, who showed their esteem of Him by gambling over His garments, which they had seized as their booty. Such was the body-guard of the adored of heaven; a quaternion of brutal gamblers. (4.) A throne of honour was found for Him upon the bloody tree; no easier place of rest would rebel men yield to their liege Lord. The cross was, in fact, the full ｅxpression of the world's feeling towards Him; "There," they seemed to say, "Thou Son of God, this is the manner in which God Himself should be treated, could we reach Him." (5.) The title of honour was nominally "King of the Jews," but that the blinded nation distinctly repudiated, and really called Him "King of thieves," by preferring Barabbas, and by placing Jesus in the place of highest shame between two thieves. His glory was thus in all things turned into shame by the sons of men, but it shall yet gladden the eyes of saints and angels, world without end.
