8월 19일 (교회를 다스리시는 예수님)

"그가 여호와의 능력과 그 하나님 여호와의 이름의 위엄을 의지하고 서서 그 떼에게 먹여서 그들로 안연히 거하게 할 것이라. 이제 그가 창대하여 땅 끝까지 미치리라." (미가 5:4)

 

그리스도는 그의 교회를 다스리시되 목자와 왕으로서 다스리십니다. 그는 지배권을 갖고 계시지만 그것은 그의 사랑하는 곤궁한 양떼들을 온유하고 지혜롭게 다스리시는 목자로서의 지배권입니다. 그는 순종을 명하고 받으시지만 그것은 그의 보살핌을 잘 받은 양이 기꺼이 자진해서 드리는 순종이요 그들이 그 음성조차 잘 아는 사랑하는 목자에게 기뻐 바치는 순종입니다. 그는 강권하시는 사랑과 선하신 능력으로 다스리십니다.
주님의 통치는 실제적인 것이 특징입니다. 오늘의 본문 말씀을 보십시오. “그가……서서……먹여서”라고 되어 있습니다. 교회의 머리되신 주님은 그의 백성들이 필요로 하는 것을 공급해 주시되 아주 적극적으로 공급해 주십니다. 그는 아무것도 하는 일 없이 보좌에 앉아 계시거나 괜히 홀을 들고 계시지 않습니다. 그는 서서 먹이십니다. 여기서 “먹인다”는 뜻의 히브리어 원어는 헬라어에도 그와 비슷한 표현이 있는데 목자로서 양을 친다, 목자로서 해야 할 모든 일을 다한다는 뜻입니다. 즉 양을 먹일 뿐 아니라 양을 인도하고, 지켜 주며, 보존해 주고, 회복시켜 주며 친다는 뜻입니다.
주님의 통치는 또한 계속적으로 지속됩니다. 본문에 보면 “그가 서서(현재 시제) 먹인다”고 했지 “그가 이따금씩 먹이다가 그의 자리를 뜰 것이라”고 되어 있지 않습니다. 또 “그가 그의 교회에 하루는 부흥을 허락하고 그 다음날은 황폐하게 내버려둘 것이라”고 되어 있지도 않습니다. 그는 절대 졸지 않으시며 그 손을 늘어뜨리고 계시지도 않습니다. 그 가슴은 늘 사랑으로 뛰고 그 어깨로는 지칠 줄 모르며 그의 백성들 짐을 져 주십니다.
그리고 그의 통치 행위는 실제로 능력이 있습니다. “그는 여호와의 능력으로 다스리실 것입니다.” 그리스도가 계신 곳이면 어디든지 하나님이 계십니다. 그리스도께서 하시는 것은 뭐든지 다 지극히 높으신 하나님이 하시는 일입니다.
오! 오늘 그의 백성들의 유익을 대변하며 서 계신 주님이 바로 장차 모든 무릎을 그 앞에 꿇게 할 하나님 자신이시라니, 이 얼마나 기쁘고 즐거운 사실입니까? 이런 목자, 그 인성으로는 우리와 함께 교제하시고 그 신성으로는 우리를 보호하시는 이런 목자에게 속한 우리는 얼마나 복된 사람들입니까? 우리는 그의 목장에서 뛰노는 백성들입니다. 그러니 머리 숙여 주를 경배합시다.

 

 

"He shall stand and feed in the strength of the Lord." --Micah 5:4

 

Christ's reign in His Church is that of a shepherd-king. He has supremacy, but it is the superiority of a wise and tender shepherd over his needy and loving flock; He commands and receives obedience, but it is the willing obedience of the well-cared-for sheep, rendered joyfully to their beloved Shepherd, whose voice they know so well. He rules by the force of love and the energy of goodness.

His reign is practical in its character. It is said, "He shall stand and feed." The great Head of the Church is actively engaged in providing for His people. He does not sit down upon the throne in empty state, or hold a sceptre without wielding it in government. No, He stands and feeds. The ｅxpression "feed," in the original, is like an analogous one in the Greek, which means to shepherdize, to do everything expected of a shepherd: to guide, to watch, to preserve, to restore, to tend, as well as to feed.

His reign is continual in its duration. It is said, "He shall stand and feed"; not "He shall feed now and then, and leave His position"; not, "He shall one day grant a revival, and then next day leave His Church to barrenness." His eyes never slumber, and His hands never rest; His heart never ceases to beat with love, and His shoulders are never weary of carrying His people's burdens.

His reign is effectually powerful in its action; "He shall feed in the strength of Jehovah." Wherever Christ is, there is God; and whatever Christ does is the act of the Most High. Oh! it is a joyful truth to consider that He who stands to-day representing the interests of His people is very God of very God, to whom every knee shall bow. Happy are we who belong to such a shepherd, whose humanity communes with us, and whose divinity protects us. Let us worship and bow down before Him as the people of His pasture.
