When Corrie ten Boom and her family were being held in prison by the Nazis, she had no idea that one day she would be faced with the difficult decision of forgiving her captors, but that's exactly what happened.

 As World War II began, Corrie was not married and had no children. Her sister Betsie cared for their father and worked with him in his watch repair shop. Corrie's family loved the Jewish people. Generations of her family had prayed for them. Her father invited Jews into their home for prayer and Bible study, and some trusted Jesus as their Savior.

 So when Hitler's Nazis took over the Netherlands, where the ten Boom family lived, and started destroying the Jews, Corrie's family began helping them get food and other necessities. Under the cover of the watch shop, the ten Booms would secretly take the Jewish people in and hide them in their home. They regularly held drills to make sure they could hide the people away quickly in case their home was raided by the Nazis.

 However, one night while Corrie was ill, she received a knock at the door. A man appeared, claiming to need money to bribe the Nazis to release his wife. Confused and feverish, Corrie hadn't realized that he was a spy trying to confirm that her family was helping the Jews.

Shortly after, their home was raided and they were arrested. The people hiding in her home remained safe and undiscovered. The ten Boom family suffered greatly while in prison, and her father and sister both died while in captivity. But once the war ended, Corrie was released, much to her surprise.

 After her release from prison, Corrie helped victims of the war find healing in the love and forgiveness of Jesus. She traveled to 64 countries, sharing how God taught her to forgive and have mercy toward those who mistreated and abused her family in prison.

 It was during a church meeting in Munich where Corrie was sharing her story that a familiar man introduced himself as one of her prison guards. He had since become a Christian and felt repentant for the awful things he had done. He asked for her forgiveness, and, through tears and reflection on God's forgiveness for her sins, Corrie forgave the man that day.

 If Corrie ten Boom could forgive the people who had mistreated her family during her time in prison, it makes our own reluctance to forgive others seem trivial in comparison. Take some time to think about people in your life who might deserve your forgiveness, or those who you might need to ask for theirs. We are called to forgive just as God forgave us.
