Messiah
Many people think the word Christ is Jesus’ last name. It’s a lot more than that. Christ is His
glorious title, which means Messiah or anointed
one.
When Andrew declared that he had found the Messiah (or Christ), it
was not some small discovery. The arrival of the Christ is the greatest thing
that has happened to the human race. Look out cruel world, the Messiah has
stepped in and is going to set everything right!
Isaiah proclaimed the mission of the Anointed one: “The Lord has anointed me to preach good
news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim
freedom to the captives and release for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of
the Lord’s favor … To comfort all who mourn, and provide
for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of
ashes, the oil of gladness instead of a spirit of despair.” (Isa.
61:1–3)
Jesus fulfilled this mission so perfectly that the title has become
part of His name. We think of no one else when the word Christ is
mentioned.
When Jesus Christ steps into our lives, He brings the special
anointing of His peace and presence. He offers healing with His
touch.
Have you ever wondered why are we called to anoint the sick with oil
when we pray for their healing? It’s a simple reminder that we are calling
upon the Anointed one to enter the circumstance.
Perhaps today you need to be reminded of Andrew’s joyful proclamation: We have found
the Messiah—the Anointed one—the Christ!
The sorrows of life will consume us no further; we have found the
Messiah!
The chains of sin will bind us no more; we have found the
Messiah!
