The posture of your heart

by 복음과삶 2008. 2. 15.

THE POSTURE OF YOUR HEART

Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight. (Ps. 51:4)

Oftentimes I take the Psalms for granted. The Bible is filled with so many stories and facts, it is easy to forget these were real people who faced the same joys and pains of life that we do today. But the psalms allow us to pause and look at what these men and women experienced on a deeper heart level. Psalm 51 gives us a glimpse of David at one of his lowest points.

David has just committed the sin that will haunt him the rest of his life. I can only imagine the depression he is experiencing. And so he sits down and pens Psalm 51. David starts by asking for mercy and cleansing. That may seem normal today, but remember, the sacrificial system was in effect during this time. David doesn't say he is bringing a sacrifice until the very last verse! David realizes it is the cleansing of the Lord that restores us, not the blood of an animal, so he bows his heart before God in reverence and humility, seeking true forgiveness.

We must stop trying to do things to earn favor with God. He is concerned with the posture of our heart and not merely our acts of service. Come to God humbly, seeking His forgiveness, not trying to earn it.

—Matt McCarrick

Seek God's forgiveness with your heart, not with your hands.
