Never Forget

by 복음과삶 2009. 5. 6.
1 John 2:20-27

"See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you . . ." (1 John 2:24)

A MOST PLAINTIVE LINE occurs in the film Sleepless in Seattle when the hero's son, speaking of his dead mother, cries, "I'm beginning to forget her." Perhaps the line speaks so poignantly to me because my father died two years ago. My own little girl was almost three and was the joy of Grandpa's life. They had a special relationship, and the compassionate little girl comforted her ailing grandfather as no one else could. I frequently talk about Grandpa to my daughter. I want her to have some memory of the grandfather who loved her so dearly.

Our memories can be so fleeting, even in spiritual matters, and there is a danger that we may forget the things that truly matter. How can we keep our spiritual memories from bringing us to the point that we might accept false doctrine? We need to remain in Scripture. When we've been Christians for a long time, it's easy to lose our passion to pour over Scripture. But for our own spiritual health, we need to keep eating God's Word. We also need to exerciseto put God's Word into practice in our lives.

Let us remind ourselves and each other of the things God has taught us. Focus on the stories of faith and tell them again and again.
