LIVE THE LIGHT
For you were once darkness, but now
you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (Eph. 5:8
NIV).
When a small community
contains both a Christian college and a seminary, it is only natural for many
townspeople to be connected to the institutions — whether through jobs or
related businesses and services. About one such town someone joked that "the
nearest known sin is twenty miles away." I'm sure it's much closer than that!
But Christians often feel comfortable in such cloistered settings, areas that
are permeated with a Christian atmosphere.
Still, light shines best in
the midst of darkness. You have heard the saying, "It's better to light a candle
than to curse the darkness." While living surrounded by sin’s darkness, we can
shine with the light Jesus brought. We once were involved in the world's
darkness, but Jesus has called us out of darkness to His light. Now He wants to
use us to spread His light to others.
A small light can drive out
a great darkness, but it must maintain its distinction as light. When Christians
become entangled in the sin and darkness of the world around them, their light
soon goes out. When you become part of the darkness, you lose the power to
shine. Light shines brightest by contrast, not by
compromise.
Life response: "Lord, strengthen me so that I will not compromise."
