Helmet, or not?

by 복음과삶 2006. 3. 16.

Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is

the word of God (Ephesians 6:17).

HELMET, OR NOT?

CONTROVERSY SURROUNDED the issue. Advocates for both sides lined up at our state capitol. In the end, personal rights won out and the law requiring motorcycle riders to wear a helmet was rescinded. The matter became an individual choice.

Ephesians 1:1 tells us that Paul is writing to the saints at Ephesus, persons who had made a choice to follow Jesus. He wants them to be strong in their struggle against forces of evil. In this battle, the armor is not optional. Their equipment must be equal to

their encounters.

Paul’s instructions are as necessary for us today as they were to the early Christians, perhaps more so. As we take our stand against the Devil’s schemes, we must be dressed in the full armor of God. We are to put on the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, footwear of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit. And we are to pray—“on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.” This is the means of warfare by which we defeat the enemy and build up the body of Christ.

Having done this then, we will stand firm in the power of the Almighty, making known the mystery of the gospel to those who have not yet heard and believed. May we do so fearlessly.
