The great question

THE GREAT QUESTION

What, then, shall we say in response to this? (Romans 8:31)

JESUS GAVE US AN IMPORTANT insight for living on planet earth: expect trouble (John 16:33). A trouble-free life can no more be expected than a Sunday school picnic without flies. The question isn't whether we will have trouble; the question is how will we face it? It's not the smooth roads that make the journey memorable; it's the hazards and the detours. Job said we are born to trouble. He ought to know. He was a decorated veteran.

Paul wasn't calling for a trouble exemption. He simply wanted us to think about our response. His great question is like a pointed spear: “What, then, shall we say?” He had to answer the same question, whether he was chained to a dungeon wall or treading water after a shipwreck. His fellow disciples were waiting on every word. He answered it in his letter to Roman Christians the same way he would answer us: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” A sovereign Lord is greater than any earthly situation. The same Engineer that designed the road of life knows all about the hazards and detours. And His grace will help us stay the course.
