The paradox of blessing

THE PARADOX OF BLESSING

“Never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.” (Genesis 9:11)

GOD PROMISED HE WOULD not flood the entire earth again. But He did not promise there would be no disasters at all. Tsunamis, famines, drought—many sorrows have fallen upon the people of the earth since Noah. Why doesn't God keep us safe from all pain? Many wise people have wrestled with that question. I can't pretend to know the answer. But it does seem to me that we humans don't handle an easy life well. We aren't good at being grateful for God's blessings. When God gives us what we want, we take it for granted. We abuse our gifts. We forget God and act as if we don't need Him.

In fact, when I consider how badly we react to His goodness, it makes me wonder why God blesses us so much. Maybe we would be healthier spiritually if He allowed us to suffer more.

Don't worry. I'm not crazy. I'm not asking for troubles! But when life is going well, it can be hard to be aware that I need God. Intellectually, I know I need Him. But I don't feel the need. And I want to feel that need. To let it send me to Him. God, help me to be aware of my need.
