Love is faithfulness

LOVE IS FAITHFULNESS

 

The greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13)

           

RECENTLY MY NEWLY ENGAGED daughter spent a half hour choosing a wedding quilt from several her grandmother had made for her grandchildren's future weddings. We had fun spreading out the quilts and admiring them. But the time came when my daughter had to choose. Then her grandmother folded the chosen quilt and placed it in her arms with these words, “Every stitch was made with love. Of course, I didn't always feel that way!”

            We all laughed. But I was struck by the truth of her statement. She'd made the quilt out of love, but there were probably times when she'd felt impatient or bored with the project. And yet she continued. Why? Because she was making the quilt out of love. And that love didn't depend on her momentary emotions.

            I'm so glad my mother-in-law reminded me that love doesn't change with the ups and downs of emotion. I may not feel in love with my husband when we're arguing. I may not feel love for God every minute of the day. But love is not proved by emotion. It's proved by faithfulness. By doing things I don't necessarily feel like doing. By sticking with commitments I've made—because of love.
