Certain knowledge

CERTAIN KNOWLEDGE

 

Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! (Romans 11:33)

 

A couple years ago, before I had heard news stories about bird flu concerns, I read a book about the 1918 flu epidemic. I was fascinated, having never heard of this historical event. The book not only covered the epidemic itself, but also the scientific efforts afterward to discover its cause and how it could be prevented. one thing that stood out powerfully to me in the second part of the book was something the author probably did not intend: the enormous uncertainty of science. More than once throughout the entire quest for a cause and cure, what was thought to have been solved with certainty was found to be indefinite at best, and at worst, downright wrong.

            Yet science is what much of our culture puts its faith in to be the answer to humanity's problems. Science has learned a great deal, but there is much that it does not know and cannot explain.

            How different it is when our faith is in God! He knows what we face in our world today just as He knew about those who suffered back then. He holds the answers and reveals them when He chooses. Nothing that stymies our scientists today stymies Him. No false leads fool Him. And no scientists' knowledge will ever equal His.
