Recognizing my father

 

오늘의 묵상 (요1:6~13)

 

 

6. 하나님께로부터 보냄을 받은 요한이라는 사람이 있었습니다.

 

7. 요한은 그 빛에 대해 증언하여 자기를 통해 모든 사람들이 믿음을 얻도록 하기 위해 보냄을 받은 사람입니다.

 

8. 요한 자신은 그 빛이 아니었으나, 사람들에게 그 빛에 대하여 증언하기 위해 온 것입니다.

 

9. 참빛이 있었습니다. 그 빛은 세상에 와서 모든 사람을 비췄습니다.

 

10. 참빛이 되신 말씀이 세상에 계셨습니다. 세상은 그분을 통하여 지음을 받았는데도, 그분을 알지 못하였습니다.

 

11. 그분은 자기의 땅에 오셨으나, 그의 백성들은 그분을 영접하지 않았습니다.

 

12. 그러나 누구든지 그분을 영접하는 사람들, 그분의 이름을 믿는 사람들에게는 하나님의 자녀가 되는 자격을 주셨습니다.

 

13. 좋은 가문에 태어난 사람들만 하나님의 자녀가 되는 것이 아닙니다. 또한 어떤 사람들의 계획이나 바람에 의해서, 그리고 그들의 조상으로 말미암아 하나님의 자녀가 된 것도 아닙니다. 다만, 그들은 하나님 자신이 그들의 아버지라는 사실 때문에 하나님의 자녀가 된 것입니다.

 

14. 말씀이 사람이 되셔서, 우리 가운데에서 사셨습니다. 우리는 그분의 영광을 보았습니다. 그 영광은 오직 아버지의 독생자만이 가질 수 있는 영광이었습니다. 그 말씀은 은혜와 진리로 충만해 있었습니다.

 

15. 요한이 그분에 대해서 증언하며 외쳤습니다. "내가 전에 '내 뒤에 오시는 분이 계시는데 그분이 나보다 더 위대하신 것은, 내가 태어나기 전에 존재하셨기 때문이다'라고 말했는데, 이분이 바로 내가 말한 그분이다."

 

16. 그분의 충만하신 것에서 우리 모두는 넘치는 은혜를 받았습니다.

 

 

 

 

RECOGNIZING my FATHER

 

 

And though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. (John 1:10)

 

 

 

MY FATHER HAD A HEART ATTACK and the family was called in. I flew to Allentown, Pennsylvania, expecting the worst. There I met the relatives in the hospital corridor. They hurriedly waved me down the hall to his room—the second door on the left.

 

Entering the room I saw a white-haired ghost of a figure with an oxygen mask covering his face. His facial skin was a pale yellow. He appeared near death. I drew to his side and stroked his forehead whispering, “I love you, Dad, I love you . . .” His eyes fluttered open, focused on me, and I heard these muffled words from behind his oxygen mask: “I'm not your dad—who are you?” It turned out my father was down the hall one more door, and he was just fine—he even lived another decade after that. I failed to recognize my own father.

 

Today's passage reminds us of a doctrine some Christians forget—Jesus was the Creator—“all things were made by him.” Christmas is a time to give gifts and remember the tiny baby in the manger, but it is also the time to recall this deeper truth: Christ himself, the Creator, entered His creation and showed us how to live as human beings. But here's the irony: the creation largely failed to recognize the Creator. Everyone we meet today is a creation of God—yet many do not recognize their Father.
