OUT OF DEBT
Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. (Matt. 6:12)
“I need $200 more to buy the Jeep,” our son Jeremy told us.
Jeremy had diligently saved for more than two years to buy his “dream car,” and we gladly loaned him the extra money he needed. However, once we did, our seventeen-year-old immediately sensed the burden of being in debt. It was a sensation he did not enjoy. When Jeremy finally paid back that last dollar, he felt a weight lifted from his back.
When Jesus instructed the disciples to pray that God would forgive their debts, He referred to something far more important than financial obligations. Sin in our lives plummets us into spiritual debt in God's account of righteousness. The only way to climb out of that debt is to ask for forgiveness. But, according to Jesus, that is not enough to put us into the black.
We must also forgive those who have run up a sin debt on our accounts. Jesus restated this command even more strongly in verse 15 when He warned that God would not forgive us unless we forgave others. only when we perform the difficult task of forgiving those who have wronged us can we realize and be truly grateful for the price Christ paid to cancel our sin debt.
