3월 21일 (주님의 고난)

"보라 너희가 다 각각 제 곳으로 흩어지고 나를 혼자 둘 때가 오나니 벌써 왔도다. 그러나 내가 혼자 있는 것이 아니라 아버지께서 나와 함께 계시느니라." (요한복음 16:32)

 

우리 가운데 겟세마네에서 괴로워하시는 주님과 교제를 나누는 사람은 거의 없습니다. 예수님의 제자들 대부분은 아직 “그 심한 고뇌”의 신비를 지켜볼 만큼 그렇게 은혜 안에서 충분히 자라지 못했습니다. 자기네 집에서 열리는 유월절 잔치에 여념이 없는 그들은 율법의 문자에 따라 살지만 복음의 영에 관해서는 아직 갓난아기에 지나지 않는 많은 사람들을 대표하고 있습니다. 열두 명, 아니 겨우 열한 명만 겟세마네 동산에 들어가 “이 위대한 광경”을 볼 수 있는 특권을 부여받았습니다. 그런데 그 열한 명 중 여덟 명은 멀찌감치 떨어져 있었습니다. 그들은 비록 주님과 교제는 나누었으나 대단히 사랑받는 사람으로 인정될 만큼 그렇게 친밀한 교제는 나누지 못했습니다. 그 중 지극히 사랑받던 세 명의 제자만 우리 주님의 신비한 슬픔의 베일 가까이까지 접근할 수 있는 영광을 누렸습니다. 그러나 그 세 사람마저 그 베일 안까지 밀고 들어가지는 못했습니다. 주님과 돌 던질 만큼의 거리를 두고 이만큼 떨어져 있어야 했습니다. 주님 혼자 그 포도주 틀을 밟아야 했기 때문에 아무도 그와 함께 그 안에 있을 수 없었습니다. 여기서 베드로와 세베대의 두 아들은 “믿음의 선조들”로 간주될 만큼 출중하고 노련한 소수의 성도들을 대표합니다. 이들은 큰 파도를 체험해 보았기 때문에 구세주가 당하고 있는 그 수난의 거대한 파도를 어느 정도 측량할 수 있습니다. 다른 사람들의 유익을 위하여, 그리고 앞으로 있을 특별하고 엄청난 싸움에 대비해서 그들 자신을 강건케 하기 위하여, 이들 선택된 영혼들에게는 고난당하는 대제사장의 간구 소리를 들을 기회가 주어진 것입니다. 그들은 그리스도의 고난 속에서 그와 함께 교제를 나누며 그의 죽으심에도 동참합니다. 그러나 이들조차 구세주의 고난의 신비, 그 깊숙한 곳까지는 뚫고 들어갈 수 없습니다. 그리스 정교회의 기도서에 보면 “주님의 알 수 없는 고난”이라는 놀라운 구절이 있습니다. 우리 주님이 당하신 슬픔 속에는 인간이 전혀 이해할 수 없을 뿐 아니라 함께 나눌 수도 없는 주님만의 내실이 있습니다. 예수님은 그곳에 “홀로 남겨져 있습니다.” 여기서 예수님은 “말로 다할 수 없는 선물” 그 이상이었습니다. 그러니 아이작 왓츠(Isaac Watts)가 이렇게 노래할 수밖에 없습니다.

“그가 주신 알 수 없는 이 모든 기쁨은
우리가 알 수 없는 고민으로 값 주고 산 것이라.”

Few had fellowship with the sorrows of Gethsemane. The majority of the disciples were not sufficiently advanced in grace to be admitted to behold the mysteries of "the agony." Occupied with the passover feast at their own houses, they represent the many who live upon the letter, but are mere babes as to the spirit of the gospel. To twelve, nay, to eleven only was the privilege given to enter Gethsemane and see "this great sight." Out of the eleven, eight were left at a distance; they had fellowship, but not of that intimate sort to which men greatly beloved are admitted. only three highly favoured ones could approach the veil of our Lord's mysterious sorrow: within that veil even these must not intrude; a stone's-cast distance must be left between. He must tread the wine-press alone, and of the people there must be none with Him. Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, represent the few eminent, experienced saints, who may be written down as "Fathers;" these having done business on great waters, can in some degree measure the huge Atlantic waves of their Redeemer's passion. To some selected spirits it is given, for the good of others, and to strengthen them for future, special, and tremendous conflict, to enter the inner circle and hear the pleadings of the suffering High Priest; they have fellowship with Him in his sufferings, and are made conformable unto His death. Yet even these cannot penetrate the secret places of the Saviour's woe. "Thine unknown sufferings" is the remarkable ｅxpression of the Greek liturgy: there was an inner chamber in our Master's grief, shut out from human knowledge and fellowship. There Jesus is "left alone." Here Jesus was more than ever an "Unspeakable gift!" Is not Watts right when he sings--

"And all the unknown joys he gives,
Were bought with agonies unknown."
