WHO WERE YOUR
ANCESTORS?
A record of the genealogy of Jesus
Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham
(Matt. 1:1
NIV).
If you’re looking for
exciting reading, the first chapter of the first book of the New Testament is
about as exciting as reading a telephone directory. But the genealogy recorded
by Matthew is very important, for it traces the history of the human family into
which Jesus Christ was born. Luke’s account also lists the family tree,
beginning with Joseph and going back through his
forefathers.
I met a college student who
remained at school during a vacation break. She explained that she had no place
to go. "I was raised in an orphanage," she said. "I have no home." To better
appreciate your heritage, you may have traced the roots of your family. It is a
blessing to be able to feel that you "know" your forebears. However, illustrious
ancestors do not insure that all descendants will be noble!
The Bible is painfully
honest about the ancestors of Jesus. Included with noble Abraham and Boaz are
people like Rahab, the harlot; Ruth, a Moabite; Bathsheba, with whom David
committed adultery; and Manasseh, a wicked king. Yet from this motley array of
ancestors, God brought the promised Messiah. He works with what He has in all of
our lives.
Descendants eventually
become ancestors!
Life response: I will glory in the fact that I am a child of God through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
