IMITATING JESUS
Be imitators of God . . . (Eph. 5:1
NIV).
Wherever young people
gather — in malls, on practice fields, at football games — you will probably
notice some individuals whose hairstyles, clothing or mannerisms mimic popular
sports stars or television celebrities.
Someone has said, "We paste
bits and pieces of others on ourselves." Imitation has been called the sincerest
form of flattery. Christ is our Savior, and He is also our example. Obviously,
we are very limited in our ability to imitate Christ. We cannot expect to be all
that He was, or to demonstrate the perfection of His character. Nor are we to
interpret this imitation as an attempt to be Christian. We are not Christians by imitation.
We are Christians only by regeneration. We do not imitate Christ to become a
Christian. We imitate Christ because we are Christians.
Imitating Jesus means
walking the pathways of selfless love, holiness, light and obedience. How
carefully we should walk in His footsteps, knowing that we are His
representatives, His ambassadors.
Life response: What I know about Jesus Christ, I will seek to duplicate in my words and actions.
