THE QUICK FIX
When he heard that
Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days (John 11:6
NIV).
People these days are
looking for the quick fix. We want easy answers and we want them now. Television
has taught us to expect fast results. on TV, life is divided into neat
thirty-minute intervals. Mysteries are solved, broken hearts mended, diseases
cured, crises averted — all within a thirty-minute time
slot.
Commercials are even more
miraculous. Asthma sufferers find relief, headaches are cured, overweight people
become slim, and the ugly become beautiful — all within a thirty-seconds time
slot No problems in your life are too big for the thirty-second
commercial!
As a result, we grow
impatient with the real world. Extra pounds don't melt away overnight, headaches
persist, and miracle products don't do what they promise. In the real world
bodies grow sick, cars break down, investments go sour, houses need repairs,
young people die.
When Lazarus died, some
commented that surely Jesus who opened blind eyes could have kept this man from
dying. Instead, Jesus stayed where He was two more days.
It is hard for modern
people to understand that God transcends the time and space of our world. His
purposes may take longer, but we can count on it that He is at
work!
Life response: Where do I see Christ at work in my life right now?
