SHUT THE DOOR!
'When you pray, go into your room,
and when you have shut your door,
pray to your Father. . .’ (Matt. 6:6
NKJV).
One successful executive
maintains a small inner room next to his office. During his busy day, he often slips
into this room to seek God's guidance.
Many Christians have such a
place. It is called a prayer closet. But shutting the door is not easy. The door
of the room may be closed, but distracting thoughts clamor for
attention.
I have found something
helpful in my own prayer life. When I am plagued with distractions, I use a pad
and pencil to jot down things I need to do or remember. Once these things are gotten out of
the way I can concentrate on prayer. I have finally shut the
door.
Occasionally, God has to
use drastic measures to get people quiet long enough to pray. More than one busy
person has chafed when laid low by illness or injury. But as a result, they were able to
shut the door and pray.
A place of prayer is
important. John Wesley's mother, used to sit down and cover her head with her
apron in order to be shut in with God. Do whatever you have to do to shut the
door and pray.
Life response: I will give my time alone with God a prominent place in my daily calendar.
