But we see Jesus . . . crowned with glory and
honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste
death for everyone. —Hebrews 2:9

Jesus shows us what to do when life isn’t fun anymore. The Gospels record seven things Jesus said while he hung on the Cross, often referred to as the seven last words. Can we learn anything from the way in which He faced His life’s worst day?
He reached out to others. Even in agony, He remembered His mother and gave her into John’s care (John 19:26–27).
He freely forgave all who had caused His desolation. “Father, forgive them,” He asked. Then He added the ultimate charity: “They do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34).
He gave an incredible gift, eternal life, to the thief on the cross next to Him (Luke 23:43).
He understated the physical torture, but faced it candidly. “I am thirsty,” He said (John 19:28).
He was straightforward with the Father. “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34). It was unvarnished communication.
He committed himself utterly to God. “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit” (Luke 23:46).
He fully accepted God’s will. “It is finished,” Jesus said (John 19:30).
One of these reactions is beyond our power. We cannot promise anyone a place in heaven. The other six are within the scope of human possibility, aided by God. Jesus faced an awful situation simply, with the realization that God’s power would be sufficient. Is there something useful here for us caregivers?
