CHRIST DIED FOR
SINNERS
He died for us so that . . .we may
live together with Him
(1 Thess. 5:9 NIV)
A large apartment building
was burning and people were trapped on the top floor. The firefighters put up
ladders and began rescuing some of the tenants. But the longest ladder on their
fire truck was several feet short of the top-floor window where people were
calling for help.
Suddenly, one of the
firefighters went up the ladder, stood on the top rung, and reached to the
windowsill above. Then he called the people to climb down over him to the ladder
and to safety. He literally became the ladder for them. When everyone was
rescued and they helped the heroic firefighter down, his hands and arms were
terribly burned. He had sacrificed his hands to fill the gap between those
people and safety.
"Scarcely for a righteous
man will one die," Paul says, "yet . . . for a good man, some would even dare to
die" (Rom. 5:7 KJV). But God showed His love by sending Christ to die for the
ungodly. Not because we deserved it! Not that we have any merit of our
own!
Christ became the ladder.
His own body bridged the gap between guilty sinners and a holy
God.
Life response: "Lord, thank You for Your great sacrifice."
