A SONG IN THE NIGHT
In the night his song shall be with
me
(Ps. 42:8 KJV).
A young boy named Jimmy
became ill. By age eleven he was confined to a wheelchair. When he was
twenty-four he became worse and was rushed to a hospital. For three days he was
not aware of anything. Afterward, he was told he would live the rest of his life
totally dependent upon a respirator. Weeks of depression followed. He had
thought of himself as a good Christian, but in his desperation and despair he
turned his back on God. For weeks, he did not want to go on
living.
But one day before dawn, a
bird began singing outside his window. The clear, melodious music seemed to be
right with him in the room. Peace and joy swept over him, and the depression
diminished. For two weeks that bird returned at dawn every morning, singing even
in the rain with a beauty that spoke of God's love.
Jimmy thought, if God loved
this bird and it could sing even during the rain, why should he be so depressed?
He began to improve. For eight more years, he was confined to his bed, dependent
on a respirator, but knowing the joy of the Lord. Soon after the story appeared
in a popular magazine, Jimmy went to be with the Lord.
God gives songs in the
darkest night.
Life response: "Lord, teach me to sing during the dark nights of my life."
