What God Wants Most

by 복음과삶 2009. 9. 18.

미가 6:6-8 (쉬운성경, NASB)

With what shall I come to the LORD And bow myself before the God on high? Shall I come to Him with burnt offerings, With yearling calves?

Does the LORD take delight in thousands of rams, In ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I present my firstborn for my rebellious acts, The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD reuquire of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God?

GIFT-GIVING INHERENTLY COMES with a lot of pressure. We wonder, "Will she like it? Does he already have one? What will they think of me?" In an article for Real Simple Sheila Heen wrote, "At heart, presents function as messages we're trying to send one another." She suggested, "Stay away from gifts with any trace of an agenda. . . . The only message you should be trying to send is one of affection or appreciation." The prophet Micah would agree with Sheila Heen's advice. In the verse above he asks himself, "What should I give God?" The list that follows sounds a little like someone trying to choose a birthday present. You can almost picture Micah standing in an ancient market, rubbing his beard, and mulling over the options. He starts small: "Burnt offerings? Calves a year old?" Then he expands to much loftier ideas: "Thousands of rams? Ten thousand rivers of oil? My firstborn?" Finally, it hits him and Micah passionately writes, "He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God" (Mic. 6:8). Justice, mercy, humility, and a personal relationship. As Sheila Heen said, gifts really are a message. And as Micah discovered, what God wants to hear most is "My heart is yours."
