He said, "Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me."
Then Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram and offered him up for a burnt offering in the place of his son.
Abraham called the name of that place The LORD Will Provide, as it is said to this day, "In the mount of the LORD it will be provided."
Then the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven,
and said, "By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son,
indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies.
"In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice."
I DON'T KNOW MUCH about my greatgrandfather, except that he was blind and a preacher. I've often wondered about him, about his personality, his thoughts, his mission in life. I wonder how he managed his role as a pastor with his blindness. I would have liked to have known him. I also wonder how much of my life is connected to his life. I'll bet it's more than I even imagine. Because he loved the Lord, he taught his children to love the Lord, and their commitments to God influenced the choices my father's generation made. And my father's choices impacted my life. Sometimes, we forget that our choices to obey or disobey God don't just affect the here and now. They set the course for all those who come behind us. Abraham made the difficult choice to obey God, though it broke his heart to do so. Because of his loyalty, God blessed Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the tribes of Israel, which eventually scattered to all the earth. We are still being blessed today because of Abraham's obedience. I want that for my children, and their children, and on down the line. More than a college education or a nice home or fancy clothes, I want them to experience God's blessing. And perhaps I can help that along by living in obedience to God.
