십계명(THE TEN COMMANDMENTS)

 대부분 미국인들은 미국의 대법원이 정부 법원 건물에 십계명을 전시할 수 없다고 판결한 것을 알고 있습니다. 언론은 이 지표적인 결정을 속속들이 보도하였습니다. 그런데 이 판결은 도대체 무엇을 의미하는 것입니까?

법원은 법을 집행하는 곳입니다. 십계명은 하나님의 도덕법으로서 결코 움직이거나 변하지 않습니다. 중력의 법칙처럼 고정된 것입니다. 당신이 그 법에 도전한다면 그것은 마치 고층 건물에서 뛰어내리는 것과 같습니다. 당신이 그 법에 영향을 받는 다는 것을 부인할 수는 있지만 그 결과에 대해서는 값을 치러야만합니다.

간단히 말해서 십계명은 사회가 자멸하는 것을 방지하기 위해서 하나님이 고안해 놓으신 영원한 법입니다. 헌데, 놀랍게도 이 시간 모래 분사회사들이 이 십계명들을 하나님의 이름과 함께 법원 대리석이나 콘크리트에나 새겨진 곳 어디에서든지 갈아내 버리고 있습니다.

우리 사회의 진면목을 보여주는 장면이 아닐 수 없습니다. 이 변할 수 없는 법은 본래 하나님의 손가락으로 돌에 새겨졌습니다. 이제 인간의 법에 의해 돌에서 지워지고 있는 것입니다.

어떤 크리스천들은 이렇게 말합니다. “그것이 뭐 중요합니까? 우리는 더 이상 율법아래 있지 않습니다. 이것이 왜 문제가 돼야 합니까?” 우리는 유대 랍비들이 정해놓은 613개의 추가 계명을 의미하는 유대 율법아래 있지 않습니다. 하지만 모든 크리스천은 십계명으로 집약되는 하나님의 도덕법의 권위 아래 있습니다.

나는 우리 목전에서 모래 분사기가 그분의 율법을 지워버리는 것을 볼 때 하나님의 마음이 어떠하실지 생각해봅니다. 어떤 믿는 자들은 “십계명을 전시해 놓을 필요는 없어요. 정말 필요한 것은 우리 마음속에 간직하고 있는 것이지요,”라고 주장합니다. 하나님의 말씀은 그렇지 않습니다. 하나님이 십계명을 주실 때 하나님의 의도는 그 계명을 눈에 잘 뜨이는 곳에 두는 것이었다는 것을 생각해 보십시오.

“오늘 내가 네게 명하는 이 말씀을 너는 마음에 새기고 네 자녀에게 부지런히 가르치며 집에 앉았을 때에든지 길을 갈 때에든지 누워 잇을 때에든지 일어날 때에든지 이 말씀을 강론할 것이며 너는 또 그것을 네 손목에 매어 기호를 삼으며 네 미간에 붙여 표로 삼고 또 네 집 문설주와 바깥 문에 기록할지니라”(신6:6-9).

 

 

Most of America knows that the Supreme Court of the United States has ruled the Ten Commandments cannot be displayed in any government courthouse. This landmark decision has been covered exhaustively by the media. But what does the ruling mean?A courthouse is where laws are enforced. The Ten Commandments represent God’s moral law, which never shifts or changes. It is as fixed as the law of gravity. If you defy that law, it’s like stepping off a high building. You can deny that the law affects you, but there are consequences sure to be paid.

Simply put, the Ten Commandments are eternal laws designed by God to keep society from destroying itself. Yet, amazingly, many sand-blasting companies are at work right now grinding away those Commandments—as well as God’s name—wherever they’re engraved in courthouse marble or concrete.

What a telling picture of the state of our society. These unchangeable laws were originally engraved in stone by the finger of God. And now they are being erased from stone by the law of man.

Some Christians are saying, “What’s the big deal? We are not under the law. Why should this be an issue?” No, we are not under the Hebrew law, meaning the 613 additional commandments added by Jewish rabbis. But every Christian is under the authority of God’s moral law, which is summed up in the Ten Commandments.

I wonder what goes through God’s mind as these sand-blasters erase his laws from before our eyes. Some believers claim, “We don’t need these displays of the Commandments. All that’s really necessary is for us to have them written in our hearts.” That’s not what God’s Word says. Consider the very visible presence God intended for the Commandments as they were delivered to his people:

“These words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart… and [thou] shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thy hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates” (Deuteronomy 6:6-9).
