EARN . . . SAVE . . .
GIVE
. . . work . . . that he may have
something to share with those in need (Eph. 4:28 NIV).
John Wesley had a threefold
bit of financial advice for his followers: "Earn all you can. Save all you can.
Give all you can."
His advice is scriptural
and practical. Christian workers should be the best workers on any job. They
should be industrious, punctual, diligent and honest. Earn all you
can.
Save all you
can. Wesley was not
advocating miserliness but frugality. Even Jesus encouraged frugality, telling
the disciples to gather up the fragments when the multitude was fed. The world
may be impressed with extravagance. But it is neither wise nor scriptural to
waste the blessings God has given.
Give all you
can. one reason
some people have so little to give is because they do not save. And one reason
some people cannot save is because they do not give. Self-preservation may be
the first principle of nature, but it contradicts the first law of Christ. The
first law of Christ's kingdom is self-giving.
John Wesley's advice may
seem incongruous at first. But if you put it into practice, it will work and God
will bless you.
Life response: I will strive for financial balance...earning, saving, and giving.
