DO WE HATE SIN?
The mind of sinful man is death . .
. hostile to God (Rom. 8:6-7 NIV).
Turn-of-the-century
evangelist Billy Sunday was known for his colorful illustrations. He said, "The
reason sin flourishes is because we have treated it like a cream puff instead of
treating it like a deadly rattlesnake."
I think he's right. Sin is
taken too lightly. We have analyzed it, defined it and redefined it. We have
called it sickness or maladjustment or predisposition. We have made excuses for
it, rather than recognize and admit that it is a deadly
evil.
A dying man was asked if he had made his peace with God. He said, "I never knew I was at war with Him." But the natural man is always at war with God. The carnal, sinful mind is contrary to the spiritual life. Anyone who has tried to live for
God has found himself in
the midst of a battle.
No compromise is possible
with sin. Jesus made it clear that there are only two alternatives. "He who is
not with me is against me," He said (Luke 11:23). We are either on the narrow
way or the broad way; we cannot walk with one foot on each
path.
Neither can we afford to
give the devil any place in our lives. "Do not give the devil a foothold," Paul
advises (Eph. 4:27).
Do we hate sin like God
hates it?
Life response: I will seek "peace with God" by totally yielding myself to Him.
