THE WAY TO HEAVEN

 

'Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven . . (Matt. 7:21 KJV).

 

The old spiritual says, "Everybody talkin' 'bout heav'n ain't goin' there." It may be that deep in every man’s heart is the desire to go to heaven. But not everyone is going to get there.

 

Dr. D. James Kennedy, pastor of the Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is a former classmate of mine. I have often heard him tell of his conversion. He was awakened one Sunday morning by his clock radio, which was broadcasting a man preaching the gospel.

 

Dr. Kennedy was about to reach over and turn off the radio when the preacher asked a question that gripped his heart and mind and changed his life. "If you were to die today and stand before God, and God were to ask you, 'Why should I let you into my heaven?', what would you say?"

 

That's a good question, isn't it? Would you answer that you belonged to the church, had been baptized, had tried to be good, had done your best? All those things are commendable and good as far as they go. They just don't go far enough. The only sure way into heaven is through repentance and faith in Christ.
