THE VALUE OF onE
SOUL
‘
What can a man give in exchange for
his soul?’
(Matt. 16:26b NIV).
Among the many fine people
I have pastored over the years was a woman who had been saved in a revival
meeting when she was a girl. In the entire ten-day meeting, she had been the
only person who sought the Lord. At the close of the meeting, some of the people
spoke critically, saying it hadn’t been much of a meeting, since only one little
girl had been saved.
She overheard the conversation and determined that she would pay back that church. As a young adult, she saved enough money to pay the church everything the revival had cost them. The woman went on to be a missionary, an outstanding children's worker, and a member of the pastoral staff of a church.
No one understood the value
of reaching that one girl for Christ.
What is the worth of a
soul? We say we believe it is worth more than the whole world, for Jesus said,
"What is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own
soul?" (Matt. 16:26a KJV)
If one soul is worth so
much, it would seem that every church, and every Christian, would be doing all
within their power to reach every person possible for Jesus.
Do we really believe souls
are so valuable, or do we just say we believe that?
Life response: Am I doing my part to win souls for Christ?
