AN ORDINARY HUMAN
BEING
‘
Let us make man in our image, in our
likeness . . .’ (Gen. 1:26 NIV).
Muretus, a Christian
scholar of the sixteenth century, became very ill while on a trip and was forced
to seek the help of physicians. To the doctors — who did not know him — Muretus
looked like a very ordinary citizen. They said, "Let's try an experiment on him,
for he looks of no importance."
In the next room, Muretus
overheard their discussion and called out to them, "Call not any man cheap for whom
Christ died."
Unlike the previous
creatures God had made, man was created in the image of the Creator. That image
makes man special, set apart from the rest of creation.
The Apostle Paul spoke to
this special nature of man. "‘The first man, Adam, became a living being’; the
last Adam became a life-giving spirit" (1 Cor. 15:45 NIV).
God had wonderful plans for
His crowning creation, upon whom He bestowed glory and honor. Even though His
highest plan was spoiled by sin, He arranged through His marvelous redemption to
make human beings part of His family.
What an honor to be an
"ordinary human being"!
Life response: I will praise God that while I am made in His spiritual image, I am fully human as well.
