OUR OWN DECISION
‘
. . . not my will, but thine,
be done’ (Luke 22:42 KJV).
Whether or not we accept
God's will for our lives is our own personal decision. Like Jesus, we want to
have spiritual support from friends, but the decision is ours alone.
Parents sometimes are
tempted to make decisions for their children. But the time comes when the
children must take that responsibility for themselves.
One recent Christmas, my
boys reminded me of something annoying I had done when they were young. Every
year, one of their presents was a plastic model car that had to be put together.
They said, "Dad, you never let us build our own models. You always put them
together for us."
I admit that I did. It
wasn't that I wanted to spoil their fun, I just wanted them to do a good job.
The problem was when it was finished, it was not their job, but
mine.
We may try to do the job
for our children, or for others, when they are putting together what they
believe to be God's will for their lives. But each person must discover His will
for themselves. The decision to undertake His will is theirs alone to
make.
Jesus, in His hour of
loneliness, had to say, "Thy will, not mine, be done." Each person who decides
to follow Jesus comes to that place of lonely decision.
Life response: I will make spiritual decisions, not based on someone else’s standard, but on what I consider to be God’s will for my life.
