God gives us joy

GOD GIVES US JOY

 

‘I have told you this so . . . that your joy may be complete’ (John 15:11 NIV).

 

The college I attended employed a handyman who appeared to be very stern and severe. He looked as if he never enjoyed life. Perhaps it was because he lived in a small apartment in the basement of the boys' dorm. Perhaps it was his menial job. But he often reprimanded us when we were laughing and having fun. As a result, of course, he was often the target of practical jokes. Scowling in disgust, he would scold, "Foolishness, foolishness."

 

His reputation as a sourpuss went back to his youth when he told two of his friends that they would never amount to anything because they were too silly. One of those fun-loving friends became a respected church leader and the other was president of the college where the handyman worked.

 

The frowning, serious-minded Pharisees were not happy men. Strictly religious, they were full of prejudice and hatred. Jesus’ positive zest for life —mingling in the happiness of people's lives, attending wedding feasts, sharing in people’s joy — left the religious leaders shocked and dismayed.

 

Yes, Jesus was also a Man of sorrows, but He must have smiled, for children were drawn to Him. He gives His joy to us!
