Yes, Sir

by 복음과삶 2009. 7. 29.

As they were going along the road, someone said to Him, "I will follow You wherever You go."

And Jesus said to him, "The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head."

And He said to another, "Follow Me." But he said, "Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father."

But He said to him, "Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim everywhere the kingdom of God."

Another also said, "I will follow You, Lord; but first permit me to say good-bye to those at home."

But Jesus said to him, "No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God."

ONE OF THE MORE RECENT discoveries I've made is that obedience brings blessings, but delayed obedience is disobedience. I had always thought of myself as an obedient person. Yet, I believed if I obeyed God eventually, even begrudgingly, I was obeying fully. But that does not meet God's definition of obedience. Our forefathers had it right when they demanded a response of "Yes, Sir" or "No, Sir" with a strong and agreeable tone in their children's voices. That kind of response is indicative of the type of obedience that God requires, an obedience that would serve them well as adult children of God. This is obedience not only in action, by complying with the requested behavior, but also in attitude, by bending the will. Why does God demand this swallowing of our pride? It is because God wants all of usevery bit of our hearts, minds, souls, and wills. At first glance, the answer Jesus gave the man who offered to go wherever He led was quite odd. Jesus did not confront him directly, but instead told a riddle. The riddle described the man's heart, which was so full of pride there was no room for Jesus to move in. The second man also had a pride problem. And like the first, his pride caused him to believe he could delay obedience, but Jesus knows delayed obedience is disobedience. He deserves a hardy "Yes, Sir."

Ask God's forgiveness for a time when you delayed obedience
