He said to me, "Son of man, can these bones live?" And I answered, "O Lord GOD, You know."

Again He said to me, "Prophesy over these bones and say to them, 'O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD.'

"Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones, 'Behold, I will cause breath to enter you that you may come to life.

Then He said to me, "Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel; behold, they say, 'Our bones are dried up and out hope has perished We are completely cut off.'

"Therefore prophesy and say to them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD, "Behold, I will open your graves and cause you to come up out of your graves, My people; and I will bring you into the land of Israel.

"Then you will know that I am the LORd, when I have opened your graves and caused you to come up out of your graves, My people.

"I will put My Spirit within you and you will come to life, and I will place you on your own land. Then you will know that I, the LORD, have spoken and done it," declares the LORD.'"

THE ABSENCE OF HOPE can be a sure killer. So found the Public Health Institute of Berkeley, California, in a study that revealed that people who experienced high levels of despair had a 20 percent greater occurrence of atherosclerosis, the narrowing of their arteries, than did optimistic people. In fact, the study's authors concluded it was the same magnitude of increased risk that one sees in comparing a pack-a-day smoker to a non-smoker. Certainly, the people cited in our passage had perished in their despair. They were in exile, separated from their homeland, their condition apparently irrevocable. That is, until Ezekiel's vision of dry bones being overlaid by tendons, flesh and skin, and breathed into life as a vast army offered them new hope. "I will put my Spirit in you," the Lord said, "and you will live." There are times when we can feel like we're dying, absent of any hope. It could be the result of an unexpected job loss, a sudden financial crisis, or a dire prognosis from the doctor. Whatever it is, know that Ezekiel 37 reminds you that God is your source of both physical and spiritual life. He is also aware of your situation, and has not forgotten you. Let those truths revive your optimism and renew your strength.
