Watching and Waiting

 오늘의 말씀

 

시편40:1-4 (쉬운성경, NASB)

 

1. 내가 여호와를 기다리고 또 기다렸습니다. 주님께서 나를 돌아보시고, 나의 부르짖음을 들으셨습니다.

I waited patiently for the LORD; And He inclined to me and heard my cry.

 

2. 주님께서 나를 질퍽거리는 구렁텅이에서 끄집에 내시고 진흙 수렁에서 꺼내 주셨습니다. 주님께서 나를 바위 위에 세우시고 굳건한 곳에 설 수 있도록 인도하셨습니다. 

He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay, And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm.

 

3. 주님께서 내게 새 노래를 부르게 하셨습니다. 우리 하나님을 찬양하는 노래입니다. 많은 사람들이 이것을 보고 두려워 떨 것입니다. 그리도 여호와를 믿게 될 것입니다. 

 He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear And will trust in the LORD.

 

4. 여호와를 굳게 믿는 사람은 행복한 사람입니다. 그들은 거만한 사람들을 쳐다보지도 않으며, 거짓 신들을 따라가는 자들을 경멸합니다. 

How blessed is the man who has made the LORD his trust, And has not turned to the proud, nor to those who lapse into falsehood. 

  

 

  THERE'S AN OLD STORY about a group of sailors who were returning from a long sea voyage. As their ship drew closer, the man could see their wives standing on the shore awaiting their arrival. All the wives were there except for one man's. After the men disembarked, and as the couples around him hugged and rejoiced at being reunited, the one lone man trudged the short distance to his home. Upon entering, he saw his wife in her rocker, knitting before the fireplace. She ran to hug her husband and told him how glad she was to see him, that she'd been waiting for him. He sadly told her that she might have been waiting for him, but the other wives had been waiting and watching. Are we just hanging out, waiting on the Lord, when we should also be watching? The two actions overlap a bit, but there's also a slight difference between them. Waiting seems to be somewhat passive, we sit still and let life go on around us. Watching, however, takes on some responsibility. We must keep one eye on the horizon, and one eye on the task at hand. Watchmen in a fortress tower needed to be most alert and attentive. Do those two words, alert and attentive, describe how we are now in this world while we wait and watch for the Lord to take us to the next?
