창세기 1장 2절

 "땅이 혼돈하고 공허하며 흑암이 깊음 위에 있고" (2절)

 

여기 진실로 하나님이 홀로 활동하실 수 있었던 한 장면이 나온다. 인간은 교만한 마음으로 저 높은 활동의 영역에서 하나님을 간섭해 보려고 온갖 노력을 해보지만 그것이 실패였음을 스스로 입증할 뿐이다. 그런데 지금 본문에 나타난 장면에서 볼 때, 진실로 인간은 다른 피조물과 마찬가지로 하나의 피조물에 불과한 자로서 창조적 능력을 지닌 주인이 되는 데는 전연 개입하지 못했다. 창조 행위에는 오직 하나님만이 가담하셨다. 하나님은 그의 영원한 빛의 거소(居所)로부터 황폐한 세상을 바라보셨고, 바로 그 빛의 거소에서 하나님의 놀라운 계획과 섭리가 계시되고 실천되어질 세계를 관망하셨다.

바로 이 영역을 설명한다면 영원하신 삼위일체의 제2위께서 사시고 일하시며 증거하시고 피흘리시며, 그리고 죽으시는 세계였다. 그가 이렇게 하신 목적은 방황하는 세계 속에 하나님의 영광스러운 완전성을 나타내 보이기 위함이었다. 모든 것이 어둡고 혼돈 상태였다. 그러나 하나님은 빛과 질서의 하나님이시다. "하나님은 빛이시라. 그에게는 어두움이 조금도 없으시니라." (요한일서 1:5) 우리가 하나님의 임재를 신체적, 도덕적, 지적 관점에서 보든지 혹은 영적 관점에서 보든지 간에 어쨌든 하나님이 계시는 곳에는 어둠과 혼돈이 있을 수 없다.

 

 

"하나님의 신은 수면에 운행하시니라." (2절)

 

하나님은 장차 활동하실 세계를 품고 계셨다. 진실로 어두운 세계지만, 바로 이 영역에는 빛과 생명의 하나님이 활동하시기에 충분한 여지가 있었다. 하나님만이 어둠을 밝히시고, 생명을 생겨나게 하시며, 혼돈을 질서로 대치하시고, 물과 물을 갈라 놓으실 수 있다. 여기에서는 죽음의 두려움 없이 생명이 나타날 수 있었다. 이 모든 것들은 하나님께 합당한 작업들이었다.

 

 

"And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep."

 

Here was, in good truth, a scene in which God alone could act. Man, in the pride of his heart, has since proved himself but too ready to interfere with God in other and far higher spheres of action; but, in the scene before us, man had no place until, indeed, he became, like all the rest, the subject of creative power. God was alone in creation. He looked forth from His eternal dwelling-place of light upon the wild waste, and there beheld the sphere in which His wondrous plans and counsels were yet to be unfolded and brought out — where the Eternal Son was yet to live, and labour, and testify, and bleed, and die, in order to display, in the view of wondering worlds, the glorious perfections of the Godhead. All was darkness and chaos; but God is the God of light and order. "God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all." Darkness and confusion cannot live in His presence, whether we look at it in a physical, moral, intellectual, or spiritual point of view.

 

 

"The Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters."

 

He sat brooding over the Scene of His future operations. A dark scene, truly; and one in which there was ample room for the God of light and life to act. He alone could enlighten the darkness, cause life to spring up, substitute order for chaos, open an expanse between the waters, where life might display itself without fear of death. These were operations worthy of God.
