창세기 1장 4, 5절

 "그 빛이 하나님이 보시기에 좋았더라. 하나님이 빛과 어두움을 나누사 빛을 낮이라 칭하시고 어두움을 밤이라 칭하시니라." (4, 5절)

 

여기 성경 전체를 통해 크게 인용하고 있는 두 개의 위대한 상징이 있다. 빛의 존재는 낮을 만들고, 빛의 부재는 밤을 만든다. 영혼의 역사도 마찬가지이다. "빛의 아들들"이 있는 반면 "어둠의 아들들"이 있다. 이것은 지극히 특이하고도 엄숙한 구분이다. 생명의 빛의 비췸을 받은 모든 사람들, 다시 말해서 "돋는 해가 위로부터" (누가복음 1:78) 임함을 효과적으로 받은 사람들, 예수 그리스도의 존전에서 하나님의 영광에 관한 지식의 빛을 받은 사람들, 이런 사람들이라면 그들이 누구이든 또 어디에 있든, 첫째 부류에 속한 사람들로서 과연 "빛의 아들들이요 낮의 아들들"이다.

그런가 하면, 아직도 인간 본성의 어둠, 인간 본성의 소경, 인간 본성의 불신앙 상태에 놓여 있는 사람들은 아직까지 의의 태양의 기쁜 비침을 믿음으로 받아들이지 아니한 사람들인데, 이들은 지금까지도 영적인 밤의 그늘에 싸여 있는 사람들로서 아들이야말로 "어둠의 아들들"이요, "밤의 아들들"인 것이다.

 

독자여, 마음을 살피시는 분 앞에서 잠시 쉬면서 자문해 보라.

지금 위에서 말한 두 가지 부류의 사람들 중에 당신은 어느 부류에 속하는가? 당신은 어느 부류에든 속해 있을 것이나 여기서는 일단 그것을 문제로 삼지 않기로 하겠다.

그러나 다음 사실에 유의해야 할 것이다. 혹 당신은 가난하고 멸시를 받으며 일자무식의 사람일지도 모르지만, 그러나 은혜로 말미암아 "세상의 빛"이신 하나님의 아들과 연결되어 있기만 한다면 진실로 당신은 낮의 아들이요, 얼마 있지 않으면 곧 "죽음을 당하신 어린양"이 영원한 태양이 되어 계시는 영광의 영역, 즉 그 태양이 비춰 줄 하늘의 영역으로 가게 될 것이다.

그러나 이것은 당신 자신이 행해서 된 것이 아니다. 이것은 예수님을 통해 당신에게 빛과 생명, 기쁨과 평안을 주시고 또 그의 완성하신 제사를 주셨던 하나님 자신의 섭리와 활동의 결과이다.

그러나 만일 당신이 하나님의 빛의 거룩한 행위와 영향력에 대해 전혀 낯선 입장에 있다면, 다시 말해서 당신의 눈이 아직도 감겨져 있어 하나님의 아들 안에 있는 아름다움을 보지 못하는 처지에 있다면, 뉴턴과 같은 과학자의 온갖 지식을 가졌다 할지라도, 인간적인 과학의 모든 주류(主流)를 열정적으로 습득하고 있다할지라도, 세상의 학교와 대학교에서 수여하는 온갖 학위를 받았다 할지라도 당신은 아직도 "밤의 아들"이요 "어둠의 아들"이며, 따라서 지금 상태에서 죽는다면 당신은 영원한 밤의 어둠과 공포에 들어가는 신세가 되고 말 것이다. 그러니 당신이 지금 "낮"에 속했는지 "밤"에 속했는지 확실하게 알게 될 때까지는 다음을 계속 읽으려 하지 말라.

내가 계속 생각하고자 하는 그 다음 핵심은 광명의 창조이다.

 

 

"And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night."

 

Here we have the two great symbols so largely employed throughout the Word. The presence of light makes the day; the absence thereof makes the night Thus it is in the history of souls. There are "the sons of light" and "the sons of darkness." This is a most marked and solemn distinction. All upon whom the light of Life has shone — all who have been effectually visited by "the dayspring from on high" — all who have received the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ — all such, whoever and wherever they may be, belong to the first class, are "the sons of light, and the sons of the day."

On the other hand, all who are still in nature's darkness, natures blindness, nature's unbelief — all who have not yet received into their hearts, by faith, the cheering beams of the Sun of righteousness, all such are still wrapped in the shades of spiritual night, are "the sons of darkness," "the sons of the night."

Reader, pause and ask yourself, in the presence of the Searcher of hearts, to which of these two classes do you, at this moment, belong. That you belong to either the one or the other is beyond all question. You may be poor, despised, unlettered; but if, through grace, there is a link connecting you with the Son of God, "the light of the world," then you are, in very deed, a son of the day, and destined, ere long, to shine in that celestial sphere, that region of glory, of which "the slain Lamb" will be the central sun, for ever. This is not your own doing. It is the result of the counsel and operation of God Himself, who has given yon light and life, joy and peace, in Jesus, and His accomplished sacrifice. But if you are a total stranger to the hallowed action and influence of divine light, if your eyes have not been opened to behold any beauty in the Son of God, then, though you had all the learning of a Newton, though you were enriched with all the treasures of human philosophy, though you had drunk in with avidity all the streams of human science, though your name were adorned with all the learned titles which the schools and universities of this world could bestow, yet are you "a Son Of the night," "a son of darkness;" and, if you die in your present condition, you will be involved in the blackness and horror of an eternal night. Do not, therefore, my friend, read another page, until you have fully satisfied yourself as to whether you belong to the "day" or the "night."

The next point on which I would dwell is the creation of lights.
