THE
'I am the way, the truth and the
life'
(John 14:6 KJV).
A lively debate on religion broke out in a college class in which my wife was a student.
Among the things discussed
were the varieties of spiritual viewpoints, the differences of opinions, and the
narrow-mindedness of some religious people. In the course of the debate, my wife
mentioned that I was a preacher. Her professor replied, "But I'm sure that your
husband is very broad-minded."
Now in the context of the
class discussion, he assumed that I was open to other views, recognizing that
other religions are also truth. In my opinion, however, what he meant by
"broad-minded" I would interpret as "empty-headed."
I asked my wife, "Did you
tell him I'm not broad-minded? That I'm very dogmatic, even in his view,
narrow-minded?"
So many people like to
believe that there are a variety of paths to God. Their reasoning goes like
this: the Mohammedans, the Buddhists and the Hindus are just taking a different
way from the Christians, but we'll all end up in the same
place.
That is not what Jesus
said.
The apostles believed,
"There is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved"
(Acts 4:12 NIV).
The narrow way is God's
idea!
Life response: I am determined to actively point others to the "narrow way."
