THE POWER OF
LAYPERSONS
They presented these men to the
apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. So the word of God spread.

THEY ALWAYS PRAYED after the softball
game. one night the pastor asked if anyone would like to pray. Someone
volunteered John. John was a new Christian and had never prayed before a group.
His face blushed and he quietly said he wasn’t ready. Two weeks later the same
scenario occurred. This time John hesitantly stepped into the circle and prayed.
It was a short, uncertain prayer, but genuine and beautiful. Then an amazing
thing happened. As John said, “Amen,” the team burst into a cheer as if John had
hit a home run. His prayer had ignited an excitement in his fellow believers
like nothing else can. John’s pastor praised God for the prayer; it had been
used to encourage him. He felt a reaffirming evidence of God’s power in his
ministry and God’s call upon his life.
Many people in the church underestimate
their importance and the worth of their contributions. This passage illustrates
the importance and value of the people in the pews. Their actions spread the
gospel. There is a cycle in the church. Pastors preach, people respond, more
people are saved, and more pastors begin to preach. Every lay person is an
important part of God’s plan to spread His gospel and encourage His ministry. Do
not underestimate the value of your personal influence and significant place of
service in God’s great plan.
