You ask yourself, can I go a short distance down the road to the left and the.. 2007. 8. 14.
Storms STORMS Let them know . . . that you alone are the Most High over all the earth. (Psalm 83:18) “DADDY, ARE YOU HOLDING on to me?” The voice came from a shivering five-year-old boy hunkered underneath a drenched tarpaulin on the twenty-five-foot, hand-hewn sailboat. During a routine run from the island of LaGonave, Haiti, to the mainland, a squall came up. Rain poured, and waves broke over the.. 2007. 8. 13.
If Only If Only I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind. (Ecclesiastes 1:17) AFTER ONE YUMMY LICK around the double dip of ice cream on a sugar cone, it spills—splat! Gone. The promising refreshment of a popsicle on a hot day drops off the stick and melts on the sidewalk. Wasted. You invest money in stocks and bonds to produce dividends; then the stock market fails. Give it away GIVE IT AWAY God . . . richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. (1 Timothy 6:17) CRAFT TIME WAS A FAVORITE PART of vacation Bible school. Painting was especially fun. A little talk about life A LITTLE TALK ABOUT LIFE Godliness with contentment is great gain. (1 Timothy 6:6) A SWEET MEMORY I HAVE as a mother is receiving the gift of a lawn chair on Mother's Day. “So we can have little talks about life” was my youngest son's reasoning for his choice. Heart-to-heart talks have great value, especially with a trusted spiritual “coach.” The apostle Paul's young partner in ministry,.. 2007. 8. 6.
No partiality No Partiality If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all, without finding fault. (James 1:5) “Oh, God, if there is a God, please deliver me from this hell” was my desperate prayer on a cold, dark February night in 1966. The one who answers THE ONE WHO ANSWERS You will answer me. (Psalm 86:7) While I was in college, I read Homer's Odyssey, and one part in particular stood out to me. A young girl offered Odysseus assistance, and in gratitude Odysseus told her he would pray to her. This made no sense to me. The girl couldn't hear the prayers, much less answer them, and it did not benefit her to be worshipped. But perhaps Homer knew n.. 2007. 7. 21.
Certain knowledge CERTAIN KNOWLEDGE Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! (Romans 11:33) A couple years ago, before I had heard news stories about bird flu concerns, I read a book about the 1918 flu epidemic. I was fascinated, having never heard of this historical event. The book not only covered the epidemic itself, but also the scientific efforts afterward to discover its cause and how.. 2007. 7. 17.
The summons THE SUMMONS God, the Lord, speaks and summons the earth. (Psalm 50:1) The card that came in the mail stated I was being summoned for jury duty and that I must appear. So appear I did. For the other defendant, we ende.. 2007. 7. 16.
Deeper meaning DEEPER MEANING Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. (Revelation 21:1) WHEN YOU LOOK AT a map of a place you've never been, all you see are words—names of cities, rivers, and mountains. But if it's a map of a place where you've been, you look at it and see what you remember of the place—buildings, trees, birds, and the scent of flowers. The same is true when a friend shows.. 2007. 7. 13.

The paradox of blessing THE PARADOX OF BLESSING “Never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.” (Genesis 9:11) GOD PROMISED HE WOULD not flood the entire earth again. But He did not promise there would be no disasters at all. Tsunamis, famines, drought—many sorrows have fallen upon the people of the earth since Noah. Why doesn't God keep us safe from all pain? Many wise people have wrestled with.. 2007. 7. 11.
Jesus loves even me JESUS LOVES EVEN ME . . . the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort . . . (2 Corinthians 1:3) I HAVE TWO CATS. They're both nice but have very different personalities. The younger one is a sweet, friendly kitty who loves to be with us wherever we are. But the older cat has an unusual way about her. She never seems to be happy. She always looks worried. We pet her and snuggle her and tr.. 2007. 7. 10.
But...He BUT . . . HE But . . . He chose David his servant . . . to be the shepherd of his people Jacob. (Psalm 78:68, 70–71) READING PSALM 78 REVEALS A SAD, depressing story of the faithlessness of Israel. These were a people who were disobedient before God. God rocks! GOD ROCKS! From you comes the theme of my praise . . . dominion belongs to the Lord. (Psalm 22:25, 28) David understood rejection. He was well acquainted with suffering caused by the vicious attacks of his enemies. David also knew God was his deliverer, even when he felt God wasn't listening. Psalm 22 has several similarities to Christ's circumstances at the crucifixion. Verse 1, “My God, My G.. 2007. 6. 24.
He prevails HE PREVAILS But it is the Lord's purpose that prevails. (Proverbs 19:21) What's the difference between a plan and a purpose? The North American dictionary defines a plan as “a method of doing something; a scheme for achieving an objective.” It refers to purpose as “the reason for which something exists or for which it was made.” We all make plans. Whether they are plans for vacation, fam.. 2007. 6. 22.
Unchallenged authority UNCHALLENGED AUTHORITY “Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation?” (Job 38:4) Have you ever questioned God? The great question THE GREAT QUESTION What, then, shall we say in response to this? (Romans 8:31) JESUS GAVE US AN IMPORTANT insight for living on planet earth: expect trouble (John 16:33). A trouble-free life can no more be expected than a Sunday school picnic without flies. The question isn't whether we will have trouble; the question is how will we face it? It's not the smooth roads that make the journey memora.. 2007. 6. 14.
In all these things IN ALL THESE THINGS In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. (Romans 8:37) RECENTLY I READ that 80 percent of all church prayer requests are sickness related. We all hurt and have family and friends who hurt. The rehab hospital THE REHAB HOSPITAL For my power is made perfect in weakness. (2 Corinthians 12:9) IT WAS QUITE A STUDY in contrasts as I stepped into the fitness center where my wife and I work out. I had just come from visiting at a rehab hospital. There are some similarities between the two facilities, such as a spacious room filled with exercise equipment. But it is the differences that grab your attention. .. 2007. 5. 31.
